Agencies pretend every site needs custom dev.
The standard agency move is to assume every inquiry is a custom build. It is the highest-margin engagement, so the discovery call quietly converges there regardless of fit. A 5-page brochure site becomes a $12k Next.js project. A small Shopify store becomes a $20k headless commerce build.
Some of those projects genuinely need custom dev. Most do not. The honest version of this conversation is to ask five questions up front and let the inputs route the answer. If Squarespace wins, the tree says Squarespace. If your app needs auth, billing, and integrations, it says custom and tells you what to ask the shops you talk to.
